Run the sample gadgets

Before running the gadgets, you must first download the sample file, add the gadget to the desktop and setup the gadget. See the Download section for instructions on setting up the gadgets.

Using the Alerts Notification gadget

Use the Alerts Notification gadget to monitor your alerts without opening the WebSphere Business Monitor Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards. With this gadget you can view the alert and then forward it on to another user if required. You can also specify that you want the alert sent to a dashboard, cell phone, pager, or email.

Viewing alert details

You can view the details of an alert by double-clicking an alert. The details of the alert contain the following information:

  • Subject
  • Date
  • Business Situation Name
  • Body (message for the alert)
Note: Details are available for only one Alert at a time.

To page through the alerts, click the previous (<) and next (>) page buttons located at the bottom of the gadget.

Sorting alerts

You can sort the alerts displayed by either date or subject.

To sort the alerts, select an option from the Sort alerts by list.

The available options are:
  • Date (ascending)—Sorts the alerts by date showing the newest alert first.
  • Date (descending)—Sorts the alerts by date showing the oldest alert first.
  • Subject (ascending)—Sorts the alerts in alphabetical order showing the list from a to z.
  • Subject (descending)—Sorts the alerts in alphabetical order showing the list from z to a.
  • Acknowledged (ascending)—Sorts the list by Read alerts then by all Unread alerts. Within each group of alerts, the alerts are sorted from newest to oldest.
  • Acknowledged (descending)—Sorts the list by Unread alerts then by all Read alerts. Within each group of alerts, the alerts are sorted from oldest recent to newest.

Working with alerts

To work with an alert you can select either a single alert clicking on it, or you can select multiple alerts holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on alerts. You can perform the following actions with a selected alert:
  • Forward Alert—Sends the alert to another user. Specify the User ID then click OK. The user ID must be a valid user in the WebSphere® Application Server User Registry where WebSphere Business Monitor is installed.
  • Mark Unread—Marks the alert as unread. Marking the alert as unread changes the color of the alert from gray to black and from plain to bold.
  • Remove—Deletes the alert from the list.
Note: Multiple alerts can be selected for any of these actions.
You can access help for the gadget by right-clicking and selecting Help.

Receiving alerts

You can also specify the ways you receive an alert of a specific type by performing the following steps:

  1. Click Edit Subscriptions.
  2. Select or deselect the following options for each alert type as required:
    • Dashboard
    • Cell
    • E-Mail
    • Pager
    Note: For E-mail and Pager the information must exist in the WebSphere Application Server User Registry.

Using the KPI Subscriber gadget

Use the KPI Subscriber gadget to monitor your key performance indicators (KPIs) without opening the WebSphere Business Monitor Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards. With this gadget you can view a KPI and monitor its status from your desktop.

The KPI Subscriber gadget uses the colors that are defined for the KPI ranges in the monitor model. If you want to personalize the colors or ranges of the KPI, use the KPI Manager in the Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards. Any changes made to the KPI properties using theKPI Manager in the Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards is automatically propagated to the KPI Subscriber gadget the next time the value is refreshed.

You can view details for the KPI being displayed in the gadget by either clicking on the KPI name on the KPI Subscriber gadget or by right-clicking the gadget and selecting details.

If you want to update the KPI Subscriber gadget before the time interval specified has been reached, right-click the gadget and select Refresh.

You can access help for the gadget by right-clicking and selecting Help.

Using the KPI Search gadget

Use the KPI Search gadget to monitor your key performance indicators (KPIs) without opening the WebSphere Business Monitor Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards. With this gadget you can search for KPIs and view its status from your desktop.

If you selected the Color KPIs according to status option, the KPI Search gadget uses the colors that are defined for the KPI status in the monitor model. If you want to personalize the colors, use the KPI Manager in the Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards. Any changes made to the KPI properties using the KPI Manager in the Business Space or the portlet-based dashboards is automatically propagated to the KPI Search gadget the next time the value is refreshed.

If you want to update the KPI Search gadget before the time interval specified has been reached, right-click the gadget and select Refresh.

You can access help for the gadget by right-clicking and selecting Help.

Running the KPI Search Index Utility manually

If you did not set the KPI Search Index Utility to run at an interval or you want to run it in between specified intervals, you can run it manually.

To run the KPI Search Index Utility manually, perform the following steps:
  1. Right-click on a KPI Search gadget and select Options.
  2. Click Index KPIs Now to run the KPI Search Index Utility.
  3. Click OK.
