Third-Party Data Collection Terminals

In March, 1998 IBM opened a brand new chapter of its data collection software when it began to support selected data collection terminals from third-party vendors. The following questions about this support are answered below:

* Although the Intermec 6400 actually has 16 rows, the bottom row is used for displaying annunciators and these overwrite any text that the DCConnect Client might write to that row.

+ The Intermec Antares 243x models default to a font which accommodates 16 rows by 20 columns. However the font can be changed to allow up to 21 rows by 31 columns. (The Client would only use 20 of those rows).

# For all Windows CE devices you can choose any dimension up to 20 rows and up to 40 columns. The operating system will pick a font that best matches the specified dimensions. Of course if you pick a large number of rows and columns and the physical screen is very small, it may be hard to read the characters.

## The Teklogix 7035 has a number of different fonts to choose from ranging from 10x20 to 18x32. 16x20 which is used on many other devices is not available on the 7035. The closest is 18x20.

*** Devices marked with 3 asterisks are ones that one or more customers are successfully running the DCConnect Client on and/or IBM has successfully tested; however, our documentation contains limited or no information about how to load and configure them.

### DCConnect continues to support existing IBM hardware (7524, 7525, 7526 and 7527 terminals) even though IBM no longer sells these terminals. However, an equivalent to the IBM 7526 terminal, the 7526-MTC terminal, is available through a third-party, R&R Services. R&R Services can also refurbish 7527 terminals. Contact information for R&R Services can be found at the bottom of this page.

The Intermec/Norand equivalents to the IBM 7524 terminals are also supported using the same flash as the corresponding IBM 7524 model. The latest flash downloads can be obtained from the 7524 Downloads page. The 7524 and Intermec/Norand equivalents do not use the DCConnect Client software.

Your Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP PC can also act as a data collection terminal. This is done by installing and running the 32-bit Windows flavor of the DCConnect Client on the Windows PC. The DCConnect Server sees the DCConnect Client running on the Windows PC just like it sees any other third-party terminal that is running the DCConnect Client. In fact, the DCConnect Client can run on the same Windows NT/2000 PC that the DCConnect Server is running on - which is a great way to test your terminal applications, especially if you do not have the actual terminal hardware yet. (You will have to rebuild your CFRs as Windows DLLs in order for them to be used on a Windows PC).

How is Support Accomplished?

Third-party terminal support is accomplished using one of two software products: The Terminal Services for DOS/Windows product does not currently provide specific support for any third-party terminal. However, through the use of a command line parameter, the latest level of the DCConnect Client does include specific support for selected third-party terminals.

What Level of Support Exists?

The latest version of the DCConnect Client (formerly 752x Emulator for DOS) is available as a fix pack on our website. This version includes support for the following functions when using the supported terminal models listed above:

The following functions have not yet been added to the DCConnect Client:

These functions will be selectively added to the DCConnect Client as customer demand dictates.

How Do I Configure/Set Up Third-Party Terminals?

The DCConnect Client User's Guide included with the DCConnect Client provides extensive information about how to configure and set up each of the supported third-party terminals.

How Do I Find Out Pricing and Other Information About Third-Party Terminals?

IBM will not provide any pricing information on this web site. To get more information about the supported third-party terminals please contact the appropriate vendor:
