Managing Background Processes

When you set or tune configuration parameters for background processes, consider how the processes are related and how adjusting a parameter for one process might affect the behavior of other processes.

Some of the factors that determine the behavior of background processes include the following:

• The total size of the logical-log and the number of logical-log files
• The size of the physical log
• How often checkpoints occur
• How page cleaning is performed
• The size of the buffer pool
• The fast-recovery parameter settings
• The number and size of long transactions that might occur

This list is not exhaustive. Other factors are involved in background processing, such as auditing and network connection polling. However, adjusting these interrelated factors appropriately affects your performance and fast-recovery goals.
